Spread the love

I have always been fascinated by the power of words, whether in books or spoken aloud. A single sentence has the ability to transform your life, evoking happiness or sadness. Words are like written emotions, a tool that must be used thoughtfully as they can deeply impact the reader or listener, either positively or negatively.

During my school years, I developed a deep appreciation for the English language and the profound role words play in our lives. Living with borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder has made me sensitive to the words of others. I often feel like I’m walking on eggshells, easily hurt by simple words that linger in my mind endlessly. This sensitivity led me to the realization that my current role as a writer, especially focusing on mental health for children, was a natural fit.

Why children, you might wonder? After spending more than a decade working in a children’s nursery, I witnessed firsthand the immense power of books and how words can stir emotions in young minds. Every child yearns to be read to, and I admire the honesty and authenticity that children possess. This authenticity should be cherished, driving me to write a book that could offer solace to a sad child.

The idea for my book, “One Branch at a Time,” stemmed from a conversation with my eight-year-old son who asked me to describe what bipolar disorder felt like. This complex question inspired me to create a story, “One Branch at a Time,” broken down into branches for easy understanding. The story was crafted for children experiencing loss, parental separation, or bereavement, illustrating the journey through depression and sadness towards hope and happiness. It aims to assure children that with time, love, and care, sadness can dissipate, and joy is always within reach.

One Branch at a Time” serves as a source of comfort for children facing sadness, as well as for parents grappling with depression or bipolar disorder like myself. Through this narrative, I hope to convey the message that sadness is transient and that kindness and empathy can help in overcoming moments of darkness. The story also educates children on how to support someone who appears sad by offering a listening ear, a comforting gesture, or simply being present – showing that acts of kindness can truly uplift those in distress.

With all my heart, I hope that my book, “One Branch at a Time,” can offer solace to even just one child or adult during challenging moments, providing them with a glimmer of hope. After all, hope is something we all need in our lives.
