During these challenging times, families are experiencing increased pressure, compounded by home and school difficulties, as well as the influence of social media. This situation affects the emotional and mental health of children and teenagers. Statistics reveal that 1 in 5 children in the UK are currently struggling with mental health issues.
Writing can be a positive method for children to convey their thoughts and emotions effectively. Some children may find it difficult to express their feelings verbally, making it beneficial to encourage them to write down their emotions. This approach not only helps them express their deepest thoughts but also acts as a valuable learning tool. Keeping a journal or noting down emotions can provide therapeutic advantages for children of various age ranges.
There are many fantastic websites which offer a variety of brilliant writing activities that promote children’s mental health. Exploring the large range of books that are available that delve into mental health, such as my children’s storybook “One Branch at a Time,” can also be very beneficial.
For younger children, engaging in activities like creating a worry jar to write down any worries to put in the jar, these can be read on a set day if they wish. There are some great writing exercises such as: What can you do to make today a good day for you and others? Then they write down a plan.
Children have so many emotions to deal with and it can be overwhelming. By engaging in writing, it can serve as a soothing exercise, helping to calm any of their racing thoughts. Simply sitting down and writing with a pen on paper can be calming in its own right.
Keeping a journal will serve as an excellent outlet for children, enabling them to express frustration and navigate complex emotions. Journaling also enables the tracking of various moods and the identification of concerns that children may struggle to talk about. Expressing thoughts through writing mirrors the benefits of speaking to a counselor, effectively decreasing stress levels and providing a fresh perspective on experiences.
A gratitude journal for kids is an uncomplicated concept: it involves children jotting down moments of gratitude, positive thoughts, or blessings they have experienced in their daily lives. Introducing the journal as a fun activity can help young children practice and express gratitude. Through gratitude journaling, children can develop and strengthen their sense of thankfulness in their daily activities. Making a special day out by taking your child to the store and allowing them to pick out their own feelings/gratitude journal can help boost their confidence and validate their emotions, and it’s a fun day out too!
Expressing emotions through writing empowers children to communicate effectively, fostering self-awareness and helping reduce stress levels. The wonderful world of writing down feelings nurtures bravery and also encourages self-care routines.
Encourage your child to start a journey of their own emotional storytelling by picking up a pen and paper.
